The following is a summary of day four of the Donaldson trial and may not necessary contain all the details of the days proceedings.

During day four of the historical sexual offences trial at Newry Crown Court, the defence for former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson contended that a letter dated June 2020, in which he expressed “regret” and accepted “full responsibility,” was unrelated to the allegations of sexual abuse against him.

Jeffrey Donaldson’s defence barrister, Kieran Vaughan KC, challenged the complainant, referred to as Complainant A, claiming she had misinterpreted the content of the letter. Kieran Vaughan suggested it pertained to other unspecified “behaviour” rather than the allegations of abuse.

Complainant A firmly refuted the defence’s assertions, stating that while Jeffrey Donaldson did not provide explicit details in the letter, he was a “very clever man” who used the wording to strongly imply regret for his actions towards her.

The defence highlighted previous communications between Complainant A and Jeffrey Donaldson, positing that their exchanges indicated a relationship characterised by “friendly banter,” which contradicted her abuse claims. In response, Complainant A insisted that such messages required contextual understanding, noting the immense difficulty she faced in reporting the abuse.

Complainant A reiterated her account of three significant incidents, including inappropriate kissing and Jeffrey Donaldson’s allegedly rubbing her breasts. She further claimed that, Jeffrey’s wife, had witnessed one of the incidents without intervening.

Lady Eleanor Donaldson was absent from court proceedings, having been declared medically unfit to participate in a conventional trial. Her case is proceeding as a “trial of the facts,” allowing for legal representation without her physical presence.

The defence team for Jeffrey Donaldson concluded their cross-examination of Complainant A by mid-afternoon.

Although Eleanor is not present, she is represented by barrister Ian Turkington KC, who is set to begin cross-examining Complainant A when the court reconvenes on Monday morning.
