In an exciting and chaotic encounter at the Estadio Azteca, England overcame co-hosts Mexico 3-2 to advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

The match was marked by Jude Bellingham’s sensational two-minute brace and a decisive penalty from Harry Kane, despite England finishing the match with ten men.

The eagerly awaited fixture was delayed due to severe weather, but the action on the pitch quickly made up for lost time. England took the lead in the 36th minute when Jude Bellingham capitalised on a brilliant run and cross from Bukayo Saka, heading home forcefully. Just moments later, Bellingham doubled the advantage, expertly finishing a layoff from Harry Kane.

Mexico, spurred by the home crowd, pulled one back before the break through Julián Quiñones, whose powerful volley gave the hosts hope.

The match took another dramatic turn in the 58th minute when England’s Jarell Quansah was shown a red card following a VAR review for a harsh tackle. Despite the disadvantage, England remained resilient.

In the 65th minute, Harry Kane converted a penalty after Anthony Gordon was fouled by the Mexican goalkeeper, restoring a two-goal lead. Mexico responded in the 80th minute with a penalty of their own, converted by Raúl Jiménez, setting up a tense finale.

England’s defence, led by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, withstood a relentless Mexican onslaught during stoppage time to secure the victory.

The win sets up a quarter-final showdown against Norway in Miami on July 11.
