The bottom of Ballymoney town came to a standstill this morning as the funeral of Paddy Douglas took place, casting a solemn shadow over the usually vibrant streets, as the community gathered to pay their respects to a beloved figure known for his warmth and love for music and motorbikes.
The coffin of Mr. Douglas, made the short journey from his daughter’s house in the Gate End area of the town to the neighbouring chapel, with a guard of honour – comprised of local bikers donning leather jackets and helmets – a fitting tribute to Paddy.
Following the Funeral Mass at Our Lady & St. Patrick’s Church, the mourners walked to the adjoining cemetery. Where he was laid to rest.
Friends, family, and bikers today shared stories and laughter amidst their tears, reminiscing about Paddy’s adventurous spirit and infectious smile. He was a man well liked and respected by everyone.
Tragically, Mr. Douglas’s life was cut short following a fire at his flat on Main Street in the town. Initially ruled as non-suspicious, the investigation took a turn after further forensic analysis.
A 34-year-old woman has since been charged with his murder and remanded in custody, leaving the community grappling with shock and disbelief.
The woman, who cannot be named due to a reporting restriction, is set to appear again later this month at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court, leaving many in Ballymoney to wondering the tragic events that led to this moment of grief.
As the bikers revved their engines one last time in Paddy’s honor, the echoes of their tribute lingered in the air, a bittersweet reminder of a life lived fully yet abruptly ended.
