Jon Burrows MLA and Ballymoney UUP Representative Gary Simpson have welcomed the official opening of Lislagan Farm & Cottages, describing the project as a fantastic example of what can be achieved through determination, partnership, and a real commitment to supporting people.

Jon and Gary attended the official opening on Friday 2 October, where they had the opportunity to meet those involved with CAN and see first-hand the remarkable transformation which has taken place at Lislagan.

The former family farm, which had been a working farm since 1820, was purchased by CAN in 2021. Since then, a huge amount of work has gone into transforming the 11-acre site into a welcoming and inclusive space offering opportunity, support, and wellbeing.

Lislagan Farm & Cottages now brings together accessible accommodation, therapeutic and outdoor spaces, horticulture, and growing areas, a polytunnel, textile recycling and woodworking, alongside opportunities for people to learn new skills, create, connect with others, and spend time outdoors.

The newly renovated cottages, stables and barn will also provide short breaks for people with learning disabilities, families, and groups, while welcoming visitors from the wider community. Importantly, this will help generate income to support CAN’s work and the continued development of the site in the years ahead.

Jon Burrows MLA said: “It was a real privilege to be at Lislagan for the official opening and to see just how much has been achieved.

“What struck me most was that this is about much more than buildings or facilities. It is about people. It is about creating somewhere people feel welcome, included and valued, and somewhere families can come together and make memories.

“CAN have taken a long-held vision and, through a huge amount of determination and hard work, turned it into something very special. Everyone involved deserves enormous credit and I wish them every success as Lislagan continues to grow.”

Gary Simpson added: “I was delighted to join Jon for the opening and to meet some of the people who have put so much time and effort into making Lislagan what it is today.

“Since purchasing the farm in 2021, CAN have worked steadily, often with limited resources, but with tremendous goodwill and support behind them.

“The end result is a place that will make a genuine difference to people and families. There is a lovely sense of peace around Lislagan, but also a real sense of purpose and opportunity.

“It was great to see it for ourselves and to hear more about the plans for the future. I look forward to seeing Lislagan Farm & Cottages go from strength to strength.”

Jon and Gary thanked everyone at CAN for the warm welcome and congratulated the staff, volunteers, supporters, and wider community who have helped bring the Lislagan vision to life.
