Alliance Councillor says criticism is welcome but abuse and misinformation will be removed

Ballymoney Alliance councillor Lee Kane has said he will remove abusive, discriminatory, misleading and spam comments from his social media pages, while continuing to welcome questions and criticism from residents, particularly those in the Ballymoney District Electoral Area.

In a message to followers, Cllr Kane said elected representatives should be open to challenge and disagreement. He advised anyone with an issue they wanted him to address to contact him by email rather than comment on a Facebook post.

Mr Kane said comments containing swearing or personal attacks would be deleted, whether directed at him, fellow politicians or other people. He also said hate speech and derogatory language targeting individuals, communities or organisations would not be allowed.

He said users making factual claims should provide evidence, and that misinformation, rumours and lies would be removed. Repeated comments and posts from apparently fake accounts could also lead to users being blocked.

Mr Kane said such comments had been rare since he began the Facebook page and hoped they would remain so. He said the message was intended to clarify what he considered acceptable, and invited followers to contact him with questions or comments.
