In a recent inquiry, Jon Burrows MLA sought clarification from the Minister of Health regarding the status of the Emergency Department at Causeway Hospital.
In a reassuring response, Health Minister Mike Nesbitt confirmed that the Emergency Department will remain a key element of the Department’s long-term plans.
Minister Nesbitt highlighted that the future of the Emergency Department is secure as part of a broader strategy for hospital services in Northern Ireland. This initiative aims to enhance the sustainability of hospital services, ensuring that no acute hospitals will close. “Every hospital is needed, and Causeway Hospital will continue to play a crucial role in providing appropriate care to our population,” he stated.
The Minister emphasised the importance of adapting to the evolving health needs of the community. He acknowledged that maintaining health and social care services requires a dynamic approach. Specific changes to hospital services will be addressed through separate consultation processes led by individual Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts or by the Department itself via regional service reviews.
The findings from the Hospital Network consultation, along with the Department’s response, are set to be published shortly, promising further clarity on the future of healthcare in Northern Ireland.
