The Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has endorsed a proposal put forth by Councillor Lee Kane aimed at implementing Dog Control Orders (DCOs) in Riverside Park and Megaw Park. The initiative, which gained unanimous support from councillors during a recent meeting, seeks to mandate that dogs be kept on leads outside of designated dog-run areas.
The proposal is set to undergo a public consultation and will require the completion of legal processes before the orders can be enacted. Additionally, the motion encourages council officers to investigate the potential for upgrading dog-run facilities in both parks. This enhancement could include the establishment of modern, secure dog-run areas that accommodate various breeds and sizes.
Councillor Kane spoke of the importance of making public spaces safe, welcoming, and accessible for all community members while simultaneously improving facilities for dogs and their owners. He noted, “Our parks are there for the whole community to enjoy. I have heard from residents with disabilities, allergies, and fears of dogs who feel uncomfortable using these spaces when dogs are allowed off leads.”
The councillor also highlighted the voices of responsible dog owners who understand the necessity of keeping dogs on leads but seek safe spaces for their pets to exercise and play. “This proposal is about striking that balance,” he stated.
The proposal’s urgency was underscored by the experiences of local resident Alex Patterson, a visually impaired individual who relies on a guide dog. Patterson has previously shared his challenges with dogs approaching him while navigating the parks, raising concerns about safety for both him and his guide dog.
Councillor Kane clarified that the initiative is not intended to penalise dog owners or promote an anti-dog sentiment. “Most owners already act responsibly and follow the existing signage in the parks. The aim is simply to ensure there are enforceable rules in place where they are needed, while also improving the facilities available,” he explained.
