The 2026 FIFA World Cup commenced with excitement yedterday (Thursday, 11 June) as co-hosts Mexico and South Korea claimed early victories in Group A, setting the stage for a thrilling tournament.
The iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City was the epicenter of excitement as the World Cup kicked off with a vibrant display. Global music sensations Shakira, Burna Boy, and J Balvin electrified the audience, creating an unforgettable spectacle. Among the memorable moments was the emergence of 17-year-old Mexican prodigy Gilberto Mora, who made history by becoming the second-youngest player to feature in a World Cup finals, following in the footsteps of legendary Pelé.
Mexico 2–0 SouthAfrica
Played at the Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, the hosts broke their opening-game jinx with a commanding win. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring with a precise strike in the 9th minute. Raúl Jiménez added a second with a powerful header in the 66th minute, celebrating in front of a roaring crowd.
The match was however marred by tensions, culminating in three red cards: South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were dismissed, followed by Mexico’s César Montes in stoppage time.
South Korea 2–1 Czechia
At the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, South Korea staged a remarkable second-half comeback. Despite Czechia taking the lead through captain Ladislav Krejčí’s header in the 60th minute, South Korea’s resilience shone through.
Hwang In-beom equalised with a brilliant solo effort in the 67th minute, and substitute Hwang Hee-chan sealed victory with a decisive goal in the 80th minute.
