Extension plans for Ballymoney fire station, which include a new gym, have been received by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
The recently-submitted planning application seeks to construct a rear extension to the station, at 31 Market Street, to provide a gym, kit room, WC and shower room.
Additional plans include replacement of an existing roof, the replacement of existing windows and doors, and erection of security fencing.
An accompanying Planning Statement said the refurbishment will allow for the improvement and modernisation of fire station facilities, with a proportionate rear extension to “improve functionality, operational efficiency and accommodation standards for staff and emergency response services”.
“The site is currently developed and in active use as a fire station [and] the surrounding area is characterised by a mix of urban development, public service uses, commercial premises and residential development appropriate to its location within the town,” the statement added.
“The proposal does not involve any material change of use and represents continued investment in essential emergency service infrastructure.
“Given the established use of the site as a fire station, the proposal is not expected to give rise to unacceptable impacts on neighbouring amenity through overlooking, overshadowing, noise or disturbance beyond the existing lawful use.
“Overall, the proposal represents an appropriate and proportionate form of development that will support the continued operation and enhancement of essential emergency services within Ballymoney.”
