In a thrilling roubd of golf, Rory McIlroy delivered another solid performance in the third round of the Open at Royal Portrush. Teeing off at 2 PM, McIlroy began his day at 3 under par, trailing the previous round leader, Scottie Scheffler, who had set a blazing pace with a 7 under par 64 on Friday. Joined on the course by Englishman Jordan Smith, McIlroy aimed to make a significant move as he entered Saturday at 3 under par.
McIlroy kicked off his round with impressive momentum, sinking birdies on both the 1st and 2nd holes. A par on the 3rd was followed by another birdie on the 4th, where he confidently made a 7-foot putt for his third birdie in four holes. After steady play, he finished the 5th and 6th holes on par, but the 7th hole proved challenging. McIlroy faced a mishap, leaving his second shot 24 yards short and overshooting his chip, which rolled a good 20 feet past the hole. His birdie putt narrowly missed, finishing the hole on par.
Despite a straight tee shot on the 8th that landed him on the green, McIlroy could only manage a par finish, and his luck seemed to dwindle as he wrapped up the front nine with another par on the 9th. He entered the inward nine, hoping for a turnaround.
The 10th hole saw McIlroy maintain his composure with a par, but fortune turned on the 11th with his first bogey of the round. However, the Holywood golfer roared back on the 12th, carding an eagle that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
The 13th hole, which should have been an easy birdie opportunity after his eagle, saw McIlroy settle for a par putt, but he refocused on the 14th, the hardest hole on the course. After a challenging tee shot into the rough, he expertly navigated back to the green, missing the birdie but finishing with a solid par just under 3 feet from the hole.
On the 15th, McIlroy found his rhythm again, sinking a nice putt for his 4th birdie of the round, bringing him to 8 under par. The 16th hole presented a challenge as his first shot landed in the native area, just 28 yards from the hole. Yet, a remarkable putt left him 4 feet from the pin, finishing the hole on par.
The 17th hole saw another adventurous drive, ending up in the crowd and rough just right of the green. Surrounded by cheering fans, McIlroy made a commendable shot that landed 33 feet from the flag. Unfortunately, his putt ran long, but he salvaged another par, heading into the final hole at 8 under overall.
On the 18th, with the crowd chanting “Rory, Rory,” McIlroy approached his last chance to add to his score. His first shot was just shy of a bunker, and his second landed just outside the green. With his third shot, he nearly made the putt, leaving the ball just a foot from the hole for a final par attempt.
McIlroy wrapped up Round 3 with a score of 66, bringing his overall total to 8 under par for 205, closing the gap behind the current leader, Scottie Scheffler. Meanwhile, Jordan Smith finished the 18th alongside McIlroy with a score of 1 over for 72, and totaling 2 undrr for 211 in the tournament.
Sadly, fellow Northern Ireland golfers Darren Clarke and Tom McKinnon could not progress past round 2 on Friday, but the spotlight remains on McIlroy as he gears up for a thrilling final day at Royal Portrush.
