Causeway Hospital has celebrated a significant milestone in May, marking 25 years of dedicated service to the community. In conjunction with this anniversary, the Northern Health and Social Care Trust has unveiled an ambitious plan, dubbed the #CausewayVision, aimed at enhancing the hospital’s services and improving patient outcomes.

In a reassuring message to the community, the Trust has confirmed that Causeway Hospital will retain its status as an acute facility, remaining integral to the region’s Trauma Network. The hospital will continue to operate its 24/7 Emergency Department, ensuring that critical care is available around the clock.

There have been questions regarding the proposed transformation of general surgery services. In response, the Trust aims to clarify that these services will remain at Causeway Hospital, with the vast majority of patients receiving assessment, diagnosis, and treatment locally.

The Trust is also expanding its successful same-day emergency care model. This initiative will enable more patients to receive urgent assessments and treatments without the need to visit the Emergency Department, streamlining patient care and improving efficiency.

A key development includes the upcoming launch of Causeway Hospital’s MRI unit in October 2025. This facility will significantly reduce the need for patients to travel to Antrim for diagnostic tests, enhancing local healthcare access.

In a bid to strengthen its surgical capabilities, the Trust has announced an additional £3.5 million investment to expand elective surgery services. This funding will enhance the surgical workforce, ultimately improving access to planned procedures for patients.

Looking ahead, the Trust envisions transforming Causeway Hospital into an Elective Overnight Stay Centre, designed to serve the entire North West population. This strategic move aims to reduce waiting times, increase service capacity, and bring essential care closer to home for local residents.

It is crucial to note that any modifications to the current service model will undergo the Department of Health’s formal decision-making process, with no final decisions made at this stage.
