In a powerful display of strength and determination, 17-year-old powerlifting prodigy Adam Gault from Dunloy has claimed the title of IPF U93kg Sub-Junior World Champion.
Competing against the globe’s elite young lifters at the 2026 World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Sun City, South Africa, Adam’s performance was nothing short of remarkable.
A Close Contest
Adam entered the competition ranked fourth, facing formidable contenders including Ethan Cohen from the USA and Mexican powerhouses Dante Urquiza and Jean Carlo Espin. The final results were nail-bitingly close, with only 7.5kg separating the top four lifters. Adam’s final deadlift of 297.5kg secured his victory with a total of 750kg, edging out Cohen by a mere 2.5kg.
Record-Breaking Feats
Adam shattered several personal and national records during the championship:
-Squat: 270kg, a personal best increase of 7.5kg
-Bench Press: 182.5kg, setting a new British Under-18 record
-Deadlift: 297.5kg, a personal best increase of 10kg
-Total: 750kg, equalling the British Under-18 record
Tom Morgan, Head GB Team Coach, praised Adam’s exceptional growth and sad he was,“incredibly proud of how the team had performed at the World Championship event and delighted to see how Adam’s confidence and belief in himself had grown over the last year.” He added, that there was, “much more to come from Adam now.”
A Journey of Dedication
Adam’s powerlifting journey began at 14, quickly ascending to stardom with significant wins, including the IPF Commonwealth U93kg Sub-Junior Champion title at just 15. Despite setbacks, such as a health scare at the European Championships, Adam’s resilience has been unwavering.
Reflecting on his success, Adam expressed gratitude towards his coach Matthew from ‘max out powerlifting’, “whose coaching, expertise and commitment have played an important role” in his success.
A Team Triumph
Great Britain’s silver medal in the men’s Sub-Junior team competition underscored the collective effort and dedication of the entire team. Adam’s individual triumph contributed significantly, earning the maximum 12 team points.
