In a move to honour the legacy of one of Northern Ireland’s most beloved figures, Democratic Unionist Party Cllr John McAuley is set to propose a motion at the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council for the establishment of a permanent exhibition dedicated to motorcycle racing legend Joey Dunlop OBE MBE.
The motion, seconded by Cllr Mervyn Storey, will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the Council’s Leisure and Development Committee on Tuesday, 16 September.
Reflecting on the recent Joey Dunlop 25 Celebration, Cllr McAuley expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “The celebration was a very special occasion which brought thousands of visitors from across the world to Ballymoney to remember and celebrate one of our greatest sporting heroes.” He emphasized the profound impact Dunlop had not just in the realm of motorcycle racing, but also as a cherished member of the community. “Joey Dunlop was not only a legend in the world of motorcycle racing but also a proud citizen and Freeman of our Borough. His achievements, humility and charitable spirit are rightly cherished by people at home and abroad.”
McAuley further spoke of the need for a dedicated space to commemorate Dunlop’s contributions, saying, “It is now time that we, as a Council, explore the creation of a permanent exhibition in partnership with the Dunlop family. Such a project would honour Joey’s life and career while providing a lasting legacy for future generations.” He added that the exhibition would also enhance Ballymoney’s cultural and tourism offerings, serving as a focal point for visitors and ensuring that Dunlop’s inspiring memory continues to resonate.
The proposal, if approved by the Leisure and Development Committee, will then move forward for ratification by the full Council.
