A 71-year-old pensioner, Anne Broughton, admitted in Antrim Crown Court to causing the death of David Tweed, a former rugby international, by driving carelessly.
The incident occurred on October 28, 2021, when Tweed’s motorcycle collided with Broughton’s car, resulting in his death at the scene.
Tweed, who had a controversial history as a four-time capped player for Ireland and a TUV councillor, was previously convicted in 2012 of multiple counts of indecent assault against children but had his convictions quashed on appeal.
According to court reporter Paul Higgins (inside the courtroom), during the court proceedings, defense barrister Mr Kieran Mallon requested an adjournment for a pre-sentence report, while the prosecution indicated they would obtain Victim Impact Statements. Broughton was released on bail but received an interim driving ban, with a formal sentencing scheduled for November 7.
